What is sore throat?

A sore throat refers to pain, itchiness, or irritation of the throat. You may have difficulty swallowing food and liquids, and increased pain when you swallow. Sore throat results from an inflammation associated with the pharynx. It is a tube which extends from the back of the mouth to the esophagus.

How is sore throat caused?

Sore throat is often accompanied by some other infections such as headache, stomach pain, swollen glands in the neck and cold etc. Some of the main causes of sore throat are:



Fungal infections

Irritants (such as smoke, pollution, acid reflux, dry air, excessive shouting)

Allergic reactions

How sore throat can be treated naturally?

Here are a few home remedies you can adopt to cure sore throat naturally:

Using salt and water

It has been shown by many studies that gargling with warm salt water, twice or thrice a day, helps in reducing swelling in the throat and flushing out bacteria and irritants by loosening the mucus. It is usually suggested by the doctors to dissolve a half tea spoon of salt in 1 cup of water for gargling. If you find it too salty, then you may add a small amount of honey into the mixture. Don’t swallow the water, spit it out.

Lemon and water

Lemon is also very helpful in curing throat pain. Its astringent juice helps in shrinking swollen throat tissues and producing a hostile environment for bacteria and viruses. Mix 1 teaspoon of lemon juice in a cup of water and drink it.

Ginger, lemon, honey and water

This is one of the most effective natural remedies for treating sore throat. Add 1 teaspoon of ginger powder, 1 teaspoon of honey, half cup of hot water and half squeezed lemon to prepare the mixture. Gargle with the mixture. Repeat at least twice a day. honey has antibacterial properties and also coats the throat.

Turmeric and water

It is considered that turmeric has the power to fight many serious ailments. This spice is a strong antioxidant. For curing a sore throat, add half teaspoon of turmeric powder and half teaspoon of salt in a hot cup of water. Gargle with the mixture thrice a day.

Clove tea

Cloves possess antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties which help in healing and soothing sore throat. Add 2-3 spoons of ground cloves into the water and make the mixture. Do gargling.

Apple cider vinegar with salt

When the bad cough leaves your throat raw and you get throat soaring, apple cider vinegar is the best natural remedy to cure the problem. It created acidic effect in your mouth which is not tolerable by the germs. Get a bottle of apple cider vinegar. Gargle with one cup of vinegar after adding 1 teaspoon salt in it. If required, use many times a day.

You can also mix ¼ cup apple cider vinegar, ¼ cup honey and take 1 table spoon aftr every 4-5 hours.

Licorice water

It is found that post-operative patients who gargled with a licorice solution were less likely to develop a sore throat post-surgery. Licorice root has the property to eliminate cough-inducing phlegm and soothing a sore throat. Add 1 teaspoon of licorice syrup or powder with eight ounces of water and gargle.

Tomato juice

Use of tomato juice also brings relief to sore throat. Tomatoes have antioxidant properties which help in curing sore throat instantly. Make a mixture of half cup of tomato juice and half cup of hot water and gargle with it.


Garlic has antiseptic properties and is good for relieving throat pain. It contains a compound called as allicin which has antifungal, antiviral and antibacterial properties which all help in treating sore throat. The main thing is to eat it raw. Chew one raw clove of garlic or take a slice of it and suck for 15 minutes. It may be difficult for most of the people because of its taste, you can add some honey or olive oil or crush the, with other vegetables and add it to a little salsa.


The mucus-dissolving properties present in fenugreek will give you instant relief from pain and inflammation. You can prepare a gargle solution using fenugreek seeds, which is very effective for treating a sore throat. Add two tablespoons of fenugreek seeds to six cups of water. Boil it for about half an hour. Allow it to come to room temperature and then strain it. Gargle with this solution three or four times a day.
