In a week where all the title talk has been surrounding Real Madrid’s demise and Barcelona’s resurgence in form, Sevilla move to remind everyone they too are a threat as they kept pressure on their title rivals with a victory over Athletic Club.
Vicente Iborra’s goal after just 13 minutes of play was the difference between the two teams in a match that was closely contested with Jorge Sampaoli’s side benefitting from a strong level of conviction in front of goal.
Athletic Club looked to put all talk of Coach Ernesto Valverde leaving to take the Barcelona job next season to one side and actually controlled possession throughout the matchup despite being away from home.
Sampaoli, also an individual linked with the soon to be vacant position at the Camp Nou, was left frustrated by how his team couldn’t dictate their style on the opposition, who continued to attack despite the defecit.
Iborra’s seventh LaLiga goal of the season spared the blushes of teammate Stevan Jovetic who just seconds earlier had missed from the penalty spot, but despite both teams having 14 attempts, neither could find a solid rhythm in front of goal.
The victory leaves Sevilla just two points off top spot and with the second leg of their Champions League tie with Leicester City just around the corner, their season is about to enter the most important phase.
Athletic Club on the other hand fall even further adrift of the race for Champions League football with the Basque side now eight points behind fourth place Atletico Madrid who failed to win their game against Deportivo La Coruna on Thursday evening.
