Following the coup attempt last month, the African Union barred Niger from all of its institutions and activities on Tuesday “until the effective restoration of constitutional order.”The group announced in a statement on Tuesday that it has decided to suspend Niger as a result of the military junta’s inability to transfer power to Mohammed Bazoum, the country’s democratically elected president.

The Economic Community of West African States’ efforts to guarantee that Niger returns to democratic rule were also applauded by the AU.
