The Imo Police Command has announced the arrest of an Inspector of Police who was shown in a viral video assaulting a young man.

The state’s Commissioner of Police, Mr Mohammed Barde, criticized the unprofessional behaviour of police officers in a statement issued by the command’s spokesman, ASP Henry Okoye, on Wednesday.

“The command condemns this vexing act in its entirety because it directly contradicts the force’s professional ethics and code of conduct.”

“The Nigeria Police Force is a highly disciplined organization that will never tolerate the officer’s misconduct seen in the video.”

“The CP mandated his Monitoring Team to investigate and identify the officer for necessary disciplinary action,” Okoye said.”

The staff had been identified and arrested, according to the police spokesman, who did not reveal the name of the police inspector.

“The recalcitrant Inspector has been identified, and he is currently undergoing orderly room trial, after which necessary disciplinary action will be taken against him,” he said.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), a viral video with the description “Nigeria Police can never be your friend, especially the ones in Owerri” went popular on social media.

The footage showed the officer allegedly aggressively removing a young man’s headgear and smacking him across the face numerous times.

The incident in Owerri, the state capital, prompted comments, with many condemning the victim’s callous treatment.
