Double-scoring super sub Nunez helps Liverpool defeat Newcastle.

After coming off the bench, Darwin Nunez scored twice in the last ten minutes to help 10-man Liverpool stun Newcastle 2-1 at St. James’ Park on Sunday. After Virgil van Dijk was sent off for taking down Alexander Isak within thirty minutes, Anthony Gordon had taken advantage of a Trent Alexander-Arnold error to put the Magpies ahead.
But Nunez turned the tide of the match with two of his rarest moments to date as a Liverpool player, and Newcastle paid a price for failing to capitalise on their man advantage.
“With 10 men in my history and 1,000 games (as a manager), I have never had something like that,” stated Jurgen Klopp, the manager of Liverpool. It’s insane here in Newcastle, at this stadium with that vibe.Just over a year ago, Liverpool paid a club-record £85 million ($107 million) for Nunez.
However, in the early going of the season, Nunez finds himself trailing Diogo Jota and Cody Gakpo in the competition for Klopp’s chosen number nine.
Thirteen minutes into the game, Nunez came off the bench and took full most of his two opportunities to get behind the Newcastle defence. He maintained his composure to fire low and hard past Nick Pope.
After Newcastle overtook the Reds to secure Champions League football the previous season, victory maintains Liverpool two points behind leaders Manchester City and sets a precedent for the early part of the season.
