According to the sector commander, speed limit violations by vehicles, particularly commercial vehicle drivers on that route, were the cause of multiple road traffic accidents.

On Saturday, a Toyota Sienna automobile plummeted into the Omo river near Area J4 on the Sagamu-Benin motorway, killing three people and injuring one more.

Mrs Florence Okpe, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ogun’s Public Education Officer, confirmed the incident to reporters in Abeokuta on Saturday.

“The accident happened around 11:55 a.m., and the suspected cause was excessive speed and loss of control, which caused the vehicle to plunge into the river.”

“The vehicle bearing the registration number APP 830 HX was travelling from Benin to Lagos,” she continued.

Okpe further stated that three male adults were discovered dead, while one person was injured in the single vehicle accident.

According to the FRSC spokeswoman, the injured victim was brought to Hope Clinic J4 in the state’s Ijebu-East local government area.

“Bodies of those who died were deposited at the mortuary of the State General Hospital in Ijebu-Ode,” she stated.

Okpe reported FRSC State Sector Commander Anthony Uga as saying the tragedy was avoidable if caution was exercised.

According to the sector commander, speed limit violations by vehicles, particularly commercial vehicle drivers on that route, were the cause of multiple road traffic accidents.

“However, in this case, the FRSC sector commander praised the efforts of local divers in the rescue operation.”

“We also sympathise with the victims’ families and urge them to contact the FRSC Ogbere outpost for more information about the crash,” Okpe stated.
