THE ANAMBRA STATE POLICE DEPARTMENT has apprehended two alleged thieves who vandalised the recently constructed 2nd Niger Bridge.

The suspects, who claimed to be from Enugu and Ebonyi, were apprehended at the Anambra end of the bridge in Obosi, Idemili North local government area.

Tochukwu Ikenga, PPRO of the Anambra State Police, stated in a statement that the robbers were also dispossessing persons of their possessions at the time of their arrest.

“Men of Anambra State Police Command attached to Harbour Division have apprehended two robbers who were robbing unsuspecting citizens of their valuables on the Second Niger Bridge,” he added.

“A police team on patrol on the bridge to prevent vandals from stealing expansion joints was alerted to the gang’s activities near the Obosi end of the bridge.”

“The police team swooped on the gang and arrested two of the gangsters while others fled.”

“When the suspects, aged 20 to 22, were searched, two daggers and five SIM cards removed from previously stolen phones were recovered.”

“One suspect was from Enugu State, and the other was from Ebonyi State.”

While praising his officers, the state Commissioner of Police, Aderemi Adeoye, asked that the owners of the discovered SIM cards be tracked down in order to gather evidence for the successful prosecution of the apprehended individuals.”

Remember that on July 13, this year, Nigerians awoke to find that the aluminium fittings erected on the bridge commissioned by former President Muhammadu Buhari at the close of his government had been stolen by suspected criminals.

The Anambra State Police Command responded by instituting round-the-clock rigorous surveillance on the bridge.

After inspecting the vandalism scene, CP Adeoye stated that the Anambra police command was collaborating with the Delta state command to protect the bridge.
